Introduction to Seiko 5

Seiko 5 has provided the world of watch lovers an affordable entrance into the joys and delights of owning a mechanical watch for over 50 years. This sub-brand of Seiko founded in 1963 was meant to offer value-driven, everyday wear watches that were sporty and dependable, along with an excellent entry point into the Seiko line-up. It is safe to say that many have owned or even currently own a Seiko 5 and I do too.

A lovely rose-gold gilt SRPD76K1, it's one of the most affordable watches in my collection, and yet, doesn’t look out of place beside its Swiss and Japanese counterparts. They’re great watches at an incredibly accessible price point, offering you the rugged dependability of mechanical sports watches and for some, a classic finesse that you just can’t get anywhere else for the same price.

What the 5 in Seiko 5 means

While many of us have owned a Seiko 5, I don’t think all of us know what the ‘5’ in Seiko 5 means. Yes, it's not some random number the creative team at Seiko thought of to christen to their new affordable collection--the 5 stands for the 5 base qualities that watches should have. Those qualities being; automatic/self-winding, a functional day-date display, water-resistance, a protected/recessed crown at 4 O’clock and a durable case and bracelet.

It sounds like a recipe for the perfect affordable and reliable modern sports-watch doesn’t it? Well surprise, surprise, it is. Since its inception in 1963, there have been many fan-favourites from the line, such as the SNXS77, the SNK381, or the truly brilliant SNK803(or any SNK80X for that matter). Seiko 5 has become synonymous with reliable, entry-level mechanical watches that give you the most bang for your buck. There’s a reason why so many enthusiasts love them, and for many, it was probably the first mechanical watch that started them on their watch collecting journey.

Which watch is the right one for you?

With the sub-brand now over half a century old, and with over a hundred different models available, choosing the right one for you might not be as straightforward as you think. Granted they’re all great watches, and you’ll certainly be happy with any of them, we’ve narrowed down the Top 10 Seiko 5 Watches for 2020 that we think, are absolute must-haves whether it's your first rodeo or you’re already a seasoned collector looking to add something affordable to your already budding collection.

SEIKO 5 SPORTS LIMITED EDITION SRPB74K1 MEN'S BROWN LEATHER STRAP WATCH

https://www.h2hubwatches.com/collections/seiko-5/products/seiko-5-sports-limited-edition-srpb74k1-mens-watch

We’re starting off with one hell of a bang for the first watch on our list, the limited-edition Seiko 5 sports SRPB74K1 turtle. Right off the bat, you can tell it’s a vintage-inspired piece, and I know that vintage re-issues or redesigns can be quite a polarizing topic. I don’t have anything against vintage-style timepieces as long as they don’t butcher the original design which, unfortunately, happens more often than not these days.

However, the execution of this watch’s design is perfect. Being a Seiko 5, there is an array of different colours available for this timepiece and the one we’re featuring today is in a brushed yellow gold case with a textured dial and distressed brown leather strap. It’s a pretty watch, to say the least, with the brushing on the case giving it a more industrial, tool watch aesthetic and the highly legible and textured dial and indexes taking centre stage with nothing to hide behind.

Where there’s a bit more flair in the design is in the exhibition case-back of the watch. With an intricate weaving pattern decorated on the glass, it obscures your view of the 4R336 caliber, but offers you a much more unique viewing experience at the same time. The SRPB74K1 is a fantastic entrance into the world of Seiko 5 for those looking to get your first mechanical watch, I think it's hard to do better than this, and for those of you looking to add something special to your collection without having to break the bank, this is certainly the watch for you.

SEIKO 5 SPORTS AUTOMATIC SRPA87K1 MEN'S STRIPED NYLON STRAP WATCH

Another vintage-style watch we have on the list is the Seiko 5 SRPA87K1 Automatic limited edition. The case of the watch is reminiscent of the ever-popular turtle style case but it’s no diver. If the design and the stripes don’t make it apparent enough, this is a racing-style watch.

From the textured, speedometer-like dial to the evocative racing colour variations in the stripes and trim of the watch. The dial features an almost carbon fibre like weave and has bold applied Arabic numerals reading the minutes. The watch is also powered by Seiko’s in-house 4R35 automatic caliber, a reliable work-horse movement you can depend on. If you’re looking for something a bit different and a little more left-field, then this limited-edition Seiko 5 SRPA87K1 is just for you.

SEIKO 5 SNZG09K1 MEN'S WATCH

https://www.h2hubwatches.com/collections/seiko-5/products/seiko-5-snzg09k1-mens-watch

We can’t talk about affordable, reliable sports watches without mentioning the humble military-style field watch. On paper, the SNZG09K1 seems like the perfect military-style field watch; compact 40.5mm case, durable nylon Nato strap, 100m water resistance, simple muted legible dial with bold numerals applied with generous amounts of lume and a robust automatic caliber.

But in person, the watch does everything it says on the box perfectly and then some. The case is not only neatly sandblasted and finished, but it also comes with a nice exhibition case-back for you to enjoy the otherwise spartan looking 7S26 caliber. It doesn’t possess a very extravagantly finished movement, but then again it was never meant to. It’s a tool watch after all and the almost industrial looking movement perfectly complements the nature and character of this watch. If you’re looking for a classic, timeless and rugged everyday wear/beater with plenty of character and an easy-to-change strap, then you can’t go wrong with the SNZG09K1.

SEIKO 5 SNKL35K1 MEN'S WATCH

If our recommendations thus far have been too sporty for your tastes and you’re looking for something a little more subdued. Fret not, because we have the watch that you’re looking for: The Seiko 5 SNKL35K1. Coming in at 38mm in diameter, it’s the smallest watch here, and with a classic black dial with applied Roman numerals on a jubilee-esque five-link bracelet, it certainly isn’t the most pronounced watch on the list, not by a long shot.

With slightly elongated lugs, the watch sits a little larger than the dimensions would suggest and is still elegant enough to be worn with a suit. And that’s where the watch’s party piece comes into play, its versatility, dressed up with a collared shirt or down with a pair of jeans and a T-shirt, the SNKL35K1 will sit right at home. Powered by the reliable and tested 7S26 caliber, it is a neat little watch that will certainly see you through any occasion and look good doing it. The best part? It costs only a hair over a hundred dollars.

Key features

  • Brushed stainless steel case and bracelet
  • Classic sporty dress watch design
  • Dependable and rugged in-house movement
  • Hardlex Crystal

SEIKO 5 SUPERIOR AUTOMATIC SSA115K1 STAINLESS STEEL MEN'S BLACK WATCH

https://www.h2hubwatches.com/collections/seiko-5/products/seiko-5-superior-automatic-ssa115k1-mens-watch

Moving away from the subtle dress watch, we’re back into sporty territory again, and the Seiko 5 Superior SSA115K1 is one hell of a sports watch. With its brash and bold design, there is no mistaking this watch for what it is, thanks mainly to its large compass on the bezel. Yup it’s another field watch, and a rather interesting one at that.

For one, this is vastly different from the SNZG09K1 we mentioned previously. Where that watch was a no-nonsense tool watch that is executed precisely, this, with its stealthy black case and bracelet with splashes of blue on the markings, is certainly designed to turn heads. But not forgetting that this is still a usable field watch, and boldly reminding you that it still is a serious piece, the massive compass markings on the bezel and the rather novel ground to air emergency signal codes along the chapter ring does give this bold watch a unique personality too. If you’re looking for something a touch bolder and left-field, this is certainly an interesting watch to add to your list.

Key features

  • Brushed PVD black stainless steel case and bracelet
  • Unique sporty field watch design
  • Dependable and rugged in-house movement
  • Hardlex Crystal

SEIKO 5 SPORTS SRPD/5KX Line-up

The Seiko 5 SRPD line is the newest iteration of affordable mechanical watches from the series, with a line-up consisting of 27 different SKUs, a few of which we will be taking a look at today. With such a massive array of SKUs in this line-up, it seemed only logical for Seiko to categorize them to make life much easier for us. So, what we’ve ended up with are the ‘Sports Styles’ with 11 models, making it the widest range, the ‘Suit Style’ with 8 models, the ‘Street Style’ with 3 models, the ‘Specialist Style’ with 2 models and the ‘Sense Style’ with 2 models.

SEIKO 5 SRPD73K1 MEN'S WATCH

https://www.h2hubwatches.com/collections/seiko-5/products/seiko-5-srpd73k1-mens-watch

The first in this wide variety of watches that we’ll be looking at is the SRPD73K. Part of the ‘Suits Style’ category which, like the first 2 watches we mentioned, is also a vintage-style timepiece. Unlike the 2 however, this feels very, very modern (it was introduced only last year after all), and is meant to be a replacement for the highly coveted and brilliant Seiko SKX line.

The SRPD73K1 (and all the other models in the range) share similar dimensions with the watch it replaces. It has a 42.5mm case diameter and 46mm lug to lug length, making it a very wearable and comfortable watch for most wrist sizes. It comes with an equally vintage-looking Milanese mesh bracelet and with faux patinated lume on the hands and markers, this watch leaves no questions for its design’s intentions. It has 100m of water resistance and is powered by the 4R36 caliber as well, so it has the looks and the performance to match as well. If a versatile vintage style dive watch is what you’re looking for, then the SRPD73K1 is certainly a strong contender worthy of your attention.

Key features

  • Brushed stainless steel case and mesh bracelet
  • Classic sporty dive/dress watch design
  • Dependable and rugged in-house movement
  • Hardlex Crystal
  • Faux Patinated lume
  • Useful day-date indicator

SEIKO 5 SPORTS AUTOMATIC STAINLESS STEEL SRPD57K1 MEN'S WATCH

https://www.h2hubwatches.com/collections/seiko-5/products/seiko-5-sports-srpd57k1-mens-watch

The next piece from the 5KX line-up is part of the Sports style range, the SRPD57K1. With a brushed stainless-steel bracelet, bold legible numerals and a uni-directional bezel, the SRPD57K1 is, on paper, every bit a proper diver as it should be, or at least, it is stylistically. With a lovely golden gilt on the bezel markers as well as matching gold hands and indexes, it’s a timelessly sporty design that can be dressed up or down effortlessly. Power comes from the workhorse 4r36 caliber ensuring that the watch is good to run for years without breaking a sweat.

Key features

  • Brushed stainless steel case and bracelet
  • Classic dive watch design
  • Dependable and rugged in-house movement
  • Hardlex Crystal
  • Useful day-date indicator

SEIKO 5 SPORTS SRPD81K1 MEN'S WATCH

https://www.h2hubwatches.com/collections/seiko-5/products/seiko-5-sports-srpd81k1-mens-watch

Next up is the ‘Street Style’ SRPD81K1, and as the name of the series implies, its design is meant for the streetwear crowd. Featuring an all-black finish on the dial, case, strap and hardware, this watch is accented with a lovely contrasting blue Lumibrite luminescence, making it perfect for anyone looking for a sleek and stylish timepiece. Now I’m not big on fashion watches, I’m personally more partial to timeless classics.  But the pricing and spec-sheet of this watch, as modern and ‘trendy’ as it may seem,  still boasts a timeless design and with the reliable 4r36 beating away inside, means that it’ll easily run for as long as it is stylish.

Key features

  • Brushed PVD Black stainless steel case and nato strap
  • Modern sporty dive watch design
  • Dependable and rugged in-house movement
  • Hardlex Crystal
  • Unique blue lume
  • Useful day-date indicator

SEIKO 5 SPORTS SRPD65K3 MEN'S WATCH

https://www.h2hubwatches.com/collections/seiko-5/products/seiko-5-sports-srpd65k3-mens-watch

The SRPD65K3 is part of the Specialist line, though I genuinely don’t have the slightest understanding or clue behind the name of this category. If I were to picture a ‘Specialist styled’ watch, it’ll be a proper purpose-built tool watch. Not a polished, smart-looking diver on a rubber strap with a crocodile printed calfskin lined on top of it. The confusing naming aside, the design elements certainly make the watch look a lot smarter, yet all the more versatile as well. I can see this easily paired with your best suit or with a pair of jeans and a t-shirt.

I personally own a model from the Specialist line, the gorgeous and unfortunately sold-out rose gold SRPD76K1 and it’s one of my favourites in my collection, albeit as of writing this, I really should give that watch more wrist-time. Power comes from the 4r36 as you would expect and if you’re looking for a tidy and polished dive watch to wear for all occasions, then this timepiece will be one to rely on.

Key features

  • Brushed stainless steel case and leather lined rubber strap
  • Classic sporty dress/dive watch design
  • Dependable and rugged in-house movement
  • Hardlex Crystal
  • Lumibrite lume
  • Useful day-date indicator

SEIKO 5 SPORTS SRPD77K1 MEN'S WATCH

https://www.h2hubwatches.com/collections/seiko-5/products/seiko-5-sports-srpd77k1-mens-watch

The last watch on the list is the SRPD77K1 part of the oddly named ‘Sense Style’ collection, which as did the Specialist line’s name, makes no sense to me either (pun absolutely intended). That aside, the watch is one of the more unconventional and intriguing ones in terms of design for the range. It features a matte black case (like the ‘Street Style’ watch) but with a unique green unevenly textured dial, contrastingly orange seconds hand and a matching green strap and bezel too. I’d go out on a limb here and say this one, thanks to its rather unconventional design, might be some sort of experimental fashion watch on Seiko’s end as well (similar to what the ‘Street Style’ might have been going for) yet finished with a level of attention that will undoubtedly impress even a seasoned enthusiast.

Key features

  • Brushed stainless steel case and green nato strap
  • Modern sporty dive watch design
  • Dependable and rugged in-house movement
  • Hardlex Crystal
  • Faux Patinated lume
  • Useful day-date indicator
