Vulcain was founded in 1858 inĀ La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland by theĀ DitisheimĀ family. In the family studio,Ā DitisheimĀ madeĀ pocket watches, which he sold under his own name.Ā Through to the end of the Century, the watchmaker was called "Manufacture Ditisheim". In 1894, watches were first offered under the branding ofĀ Vulcain,Ā with the company now under the leadership ofĀ Maurice Ditisheim'sĀ son, Ernest-Albert Ditisheim.Ā In 1900,Ā DitisheimĀ registered the name 'Vulcain' as a brand name for hisĀ pocket watches, naming it after theĀ RomanĀ god of Fire.
